Mahatma House

5 Bedroom Villa  from USD 590 ++ per night
Surrounded by rice terraces and lush tropical gardens, Mahatma House, on Bali\’s south-west coast, boasts three pavilions symmetrically arranged around an emerald green swimming pool that forms the centerpiece of the villa. This sleek and lavish five-bedroom property is achingly stylish, an inspired mix of traditional and contemporary elements featuring polished black surfaces, meticulous symmetrical lines imbued with a stunning array of Zen inspired Chinese/Japanese antiquities.
Privately enclosed within a spacious walled garden peppered with palm trees, tropical plants, large flagstones, sculptures and carvings, Mahatma House is just a minutes\’ walk to the traditional Balinese village of Seseh, a traditional beach-side village which, for the most part, still retains the customs and culture of old Bali.
As a result of the carefully planned and laid out design, a study in perfect architectural symmetry, Mahatma House, built in 2009, is extremely spacious and airy with the open planned rooms flowing seamlessly from one to another.
All five of the generously spaced bedrooms at Mahatma House, featuring the property\’s signature sleek black décor, highly-polished black concrete floors, gold tints and exposed raw wooden surfaces, are furnished with king-size beds, and equipped with en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning.
With its bold and dramatic blacker than black shiny sleek interiors, complemented by an array of Asian antiquities, Mahatma House is perhaps a little unconventional, but that\’s precisely why we love it.
Mahatma House is located in the charming and traditional seaside village of Seseh, just a few metres from a black volcanic-sand beach: take a stroll along the shore, watch the local fisherman reel in the catch of the day, or wander to the village temple on the foreshore to observe the colourful daily ceremonies.
A trip to the famous sea temple of Tanah Lot at sunset is an absolute must, as is the Nirwana Bali Golf Course, one of Asia’s best: both are just a ten-minute drive away from Mahatma House. Sophisticated Seminyak, with its dazzling array of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops, and Bali’s fascinating cultural centre of Ubud, are also within easy reach.

Canggu proper is a small village on the beach about 20 minutes north of Seminyak, half way to Tanah Lot. Canggu is widely used though to refer to a large coastal stretch of about 8 km, running north from the village of Berawa (just north of Seminyak) to the village of Cemagi (just south of Tanah Lot) taking in “Batu Bolong Beach”, Echo Beach, “”Nelayan Beach””, Pererenan Beach, Selasih Beach, Seseh Beach and Mengening Beach along the way. It is still a largely rural area away from the beaches, but is being developed fast.
The coast is undeniably a paradise for eager surfers.

Nelayan Beach (Fisherman Beach) is where you can still get fresh fish, lobsters, prawns etc every early morning. Five minutes walk between Berawa Beach and Batu Bolong Beach.

The area is popular with many expatriates who choose to live here, and a large number of the villas owned by overseas nationals are located here. Much of the area features quietly undulating terrain with the rice paddies that typify much of south central Bali.

The beaches have dark grey or black sand, they do offer some popular and challenging surfing spots. Surfers from all over the world gather to enjoy surf sessions with friends. Canggu also adds another spiritual dimension to surfing as savoring an exquisite sunset from your perch on a surfboard is of common practice.  The 3 main beaches around are the Echo Beach, the Canggu Beach and the Brawa Beach.  The beaches have dark grey or black sand and are not particularly good for swimming, but do offer some renowned and challenging surfing spots.
For non-surfers, it’s a nice sandy spot from where to watch the action.

Berawa Beach has a couple of surfer cafes by the pounding sea; the grey volcanic sand here slopes steeply into foaming water. Overlooking it all is the vast estate of fashionista Paul Ropp.

Nelayan Beach  has a collection of fishing boats and huts marks the very mellow stretch of sand at the Beach that fronts villa-land. Depending on the river levels, it can be an easy walk from here to Prancak and Batu Bolong Beaches.
